Second Hand Timeshare Sales

There’s a little secret going around about time shares and it’s this: the best way to get a deal is to get in on second hand timeshare sales. These are available all over the Internet in places like eBay, individual’s buy and trade sites, and even Craigslist. There is actually quite a market here, because many people for one reason or another have bought in but now want to get out and wonder how to sell my timeshare? Like a used car, as soon as they’ve bought it and “driven it off the lot” it loses a big percentage of its value. That’s where you can come in and but their time-share for anywhere from 50% to 99% off. (Okay, 99% is probably a little unrealistic but it does happen.)

You see, what happens is that lots of people get hooked into buying a time share through a very sophisticated sales process. They may be hooked in through telemarketing to come watch a presentation put on by the sales group. They are enticed by offers of free prizes and even cash giveaways. Or they may get hooked in while they’re actually vacationing somewhere like Florida, Hawaii, or Mexico. Marketers like these types of people because they’re pre-qualified because they’re already showing that they like to vacation in that spot.

These people then show up to the presentation and are marketed to so hard that a high percentage of them end up buying into the timeshare. The problem is that while it is mostly a legit business providing a valuable product, some of these buyers end up not liking the maintenance fees and such that come down the road. Any of a number of things could contribute to them throwing their deeds into the second hand timeshare sales mix.

Now this is the market where you want to be. It is so much better to scoop up these second hand deals while avoiding the big sales process. Sometimes these people are so desperate to get out of their second hand timeshare sales that they’ll actually pay you to take it off their hands.

Obviously whatever you do you have to watch out for fraudsters, but there are definitely a lot of legitimate second hand timeshares on the market today. Make sure to read all the documentation and know what you’re getting into legally. You don’t want to buy into a money drain. Lastly, I would just say don’t make the same mistake that many have made: don’t view a timeshare as an investment.

Reselling Your Timeshare with a Broker

You may be asking yourself should I sell my timeshare through a broker? There are many companies that specialize in timeshare resales.  Some are reputable and some will scam you so spend a little time and be sure to do your research on the companies before deciding which one to list your timeshare with to sell.   If you know people that have sold their timeshares, ask them how they sold their timeshare and if they were satisfied with the brokerage company or any other way they used to sell it.  Ask how much it cost them to sell their timeshare so you know about how much to expect to pay in sellling fees.

Once you have found a broker or resale company, ask questions about the fees.  Find out if there will be any other charges for advertising so you are not surprised.  Check and see how the company is handling other listings, especially listings that are comparable to the timeshare you are trying to sell.  Do your own background check on the company.  You can find out a lot by searching on the internet.  There are also companies that rate the timeshare resale companies.  Visit those sites and see what they have to say.

Forums are another way to help you sort the bad from the good.  People are happy and willing to share their personal experiences and you can learn from their mistakes and successes.  After you read the forum posts for a little while, you will get a sense of the top companies that will be good to use.  After that, you will be able to narrow down your short list of companies to the one that you are most comfortable with in using.

Using a broker to resell your timeshare may be advantageous.  Most people buying a timeshare, especially if they are new at it will be more comfortable buying a timeshare through a company instead of a private party.  A broker will also be able to provide a lot more exposure for your timeshare.

There are more timeshares for sale than there are buyers, so expect to wait quite a while before your timeshare sells.  If you get half of what you paid for it originally, consider yourself lucky.  Look at the vacation time you spent there as spending part of the money that you paid for it.  The best thing about selling your timeshare will be getting rid of the responsibility of owning it and not having to pay the maintenance fees anymore.

Why Is It So Hard To Sell My Timeshare?

After you’ve owned your timeshare for a while and have decided to sell it, you may discover it isn’t as easy as you thought it would be.  One of the major factors that make a timeshare hard to sell is that there are so many of them for sale.  It is definitely a buyers’ market.  Most people that buy timeshares attend a presentation and are hard-selled with the advantages of buying a timeshare and even given a tv or a vacation if they buy.  If you’re selling your timeshare second-hand, so to speak, you don’t have those advantages.

Another disadvantage is if you still owe money on your timeshare.  To be able to transfer the title on your timeshare you will need to have the timeshare paid off, or to be able to pay off what is owed on it.  This would hopefully be paid off by the buyer, but if you can’t sell your timeshare for what is owed on it you have to be prepared to make up the difference.   If what you owe isn’t very much, you may be able to find a buyer to pay it off for you.

The best way to sell my timeshare fast is to list it with a company that sells timeshare.  You need to be very careful when you do this.  There are a lot of reputable companies and disreputable companies.  If they promise you the sun and the moon, walk the other way.  You can also list your timeshare with a real estate agent in which case you wouldn’t be charged a fee until the property sells.   Do not get talked into paying for an appraisal for your timeshare.  It isn’t necessary unless it is part of an estate or you are going to donate your timeshare for charity.  Then you would want an honest fair market value for it.

If you want to try to sell your timeshare yourself, list it online for sale.  There are many free classified advertising sites where you could list it.  Try to think of places that experienced timeshare owners would look.  Specialized classifieds for timeshares will ensure that most of your visitors are actually looking for a timeshare and want a bargain.  Do a search for timeshare classifieds and you’ll come up with over 100K results.   eBay and Craigslist are also good places to get a lot of exposure for selling your timeshare.
